ST. LAWRENCE COUNTY, N.Y. -- Two Ogdensburg natives will be making the mile long swim across the St. Lawrence River this Sunday.
Renee Langstaff and her cousin Andee West will be swimming from Prescott, Ontario, Canada to their hometown of Ogdensburg. And they’re swimming for a cause, hoping to raise awareness about Sudden Cardiac Arrest in children.
Langstaff says she’s personally connected to the cause. Her goddaughter, Sydney, was born with a heart defect and survived, but many don't.
"One thing that bothers me is that children are out there, they're children who if you look at them, appear to be young, active, otherwise healthy children and many times, the way that a parent finds out that they're child has an underlying cardiac defect is they suddenly have an arrest," Langstaff said.
The cousins are hoping to raise more than $1,000. The money will go directly to Parent Heart Watch and will be used for free screenings to prevent heart problems before they occur.
