The Mars Curiosity rover has landed on the red planet. The rover plunged through the Martian atmosphere before being slowed down by small rockets, and was then lowered into the crater by cable.

This was the first time NASA attempted to land equipment this way.

The $2.5 billion roving laboratory will spend the next two years drilling into rocks and scooping up soil. It will be exploring whether the planet's environment could have supported life in the form of microscopic organisms.
