BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. -- Congressman Richard Hanna was in the Southern Tier Tuesday talking about emergency preparedness and funding for it.
Hanna was looking for input from local officials on ways to make the federal government dollars more effective when preparing for and recovering from disasters. He also talked about spending money wisely to help protect communities more adequately for future flood disasters.
Hanna said, "We need to find ways to allow communities to clean up in front of themselves and ahead of storms, places they know they need to, places that cause problems when they have storms."
Hanna is also co-sponsoring proposed legislation that encourages states to adopt building codes that would more effectively protect structures in the event of a natural disaster.
Hanna is facing a challenge from democratic candidate Dan Lamb in the November election for the newly-created 22nd Congressional District.
