CICERO, N.Y. -- Communities across the country are teaming up with their local law enforcement and public safety officials to stop crime in their neighborhoods.

The 29th annual National Night Out was held in Cicero Tuesday in an effort to highlight public safety and to send a message that neighbors are fighting back against local crime.

The event gave kids a chance to enjoy carnival games and a dunk tank and allowed parents to get their kids fingerprinted and have car seats inspected. It was also a chance for people to meet their local law enforcement officials.

"We shouldn't be just police officers driving by in a car. We're people, we're here for the community, we provide that service. We just hope that there's that interaction so that they're more comfortable with us. And they know that we're there for them for whatever their needs," said Onondaga County Sheriff’s Sergeant John Stephens.

This year, Target not only sponsored the event, but gave a $1,000 grant to the Onondaga Sheriff's Department to purchase new safety equipment.
