Adult recovering from West Nile virus

ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Yet more evidence that West Nile is widespread in Onondaga County this summer. Health officials say they have confirmed the county's first human case of the virus so far this year.

Health Commissioner Cynthia Morrow says an adult contracted the virus and was briefly hospitalized. She says that person is now doing well and should have a full recovery.

The finding follows another recent case in Oswego, where a child is recovering after contracting the West Nile virus.

These cases, along with evidence found in a number of mosquito pools throughout the area, have health officials urging residents to take precautions. They include covering up as much skin as possible when outdoors for a long period of time, and using a mosquito repellent to prevent bites.

Officials also say you should reduce potential breeding grounds by eliminating standing water on your property.
