STATEWIDE -- New York fruit production isn't looking good. The U.S. Department of Agriculture released projected numbers yesterday, and they show a significant drop in crop production.

Officials said the warm March days, cool April nights, and the record heat this summer are to blame. Apple production is forecasted to be down 52 percent from last year, with a total 590 million pounds. Last year's crop yielded 1.22 billion pounds.

Grape production is also expected to take a significant hit. It is forecasted to be down 39 percent from a year ago, which is the lowest forecast since 1977. Peach and pear production are expected to be down to new record lows as well. Only 2,700 pounds of peaches are expected to be harvested this year, and only about 2,500 pears are expected to be harvested.
