Fresh Air child having fun with family

Last week, we told you about 20 children who came to the area from New York City to spend a summer in the country. This week, we caught up with a family that’s been making a difference in one child’s life for three years now. As our Elyse Mickalonis tells us, the Sloan family says hosting a Fresh Air child is just as rewarding for them as it is for him.

VESTAL, N.Y. -- Dangelo ‘De-lo’ James has been enjoying his summer.

“I like to go places and swim,” said Dangelo James, a New York City resident. “We built a bike, spray painted it, customized it.”

James is one of 20 children who arrived in Johnson City last week to spend some time with a local family. The kids are part of the Fresh Air Fund organization which gives city children a chance to experience life in the country. Each host family plans activities for their young visitors.

“We went tubing and boating. De-lo caught a bass,” said Karen Sloan, an Endicott resident.

Endicott resident Molly Sloan added, “We go swim in the pool and we always go to my friend's house.”

This is James’ third summer with the Sloans. They say he fits right in with their family.

“He knows the neighbors, the neighborhood kids. It’s fun,” said Karen Sloan. “When we see him again, it’s like he never left.”

James added, “Up here is a very peaceful and a good place.”

The Sloans say having ‘De-lo’ visit is just as rewarding for them as it is for him.

"I think it's a great thing to do for someone else who does have the opportunity my kids have to be outside all summer long to swim and play,” said Karen Sloan.

James added, "It's beautiful and where I live, I don't have a lot of stuff to do, so when I come here, I experience new things."

New things with old friends.

The Fresh Air Fund also made trips to Owego and Ithaca.
