BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- A car crash sparks a fire in Binghamton, sending two people to the hospital. It happened outside the Firestone Auto Shop on Lewis Street a little after 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Police say Ellen Grimm, 88, crashed after leaving a restaurant on Prospect Street, hitting a parked car and the area of the building where gas meters are connected. That snapped the meter, fueling what police call a very intense fire.

Employees at the shop were able to pull Grimm out of her vehicle. She and a passenger were taken to the hospital with minor burns.

Fire crews worked quickly to get the flames under control and police say they were able to prevent a nearby utility pole from burning too badly, which could have cut power to much of the city.

The building sustained some damage, mostly from water.
