ITHACA, N.Y. -- Some changes are coming to the bridges over Ithaca's gorges starting this week. Work is set to begin to remove black fences from seven bridges and replace them with steel mesh nets.

The fences were put up in an effort to combat suicides in the city. Temporary barriers were installed after three Cornell University students jumped to their deaths in two months in 2010.

A group put together by Cornell says half of the student suicides over the past 20 years resulted from jumping off bridges, so a more permanent solution was devised.

A horizontal net system will be attacked to the bottom of the bridge, projecting out 15 feet on each side.

Ithaca's mayor says the goal is to save lives while still allowing for unobstructed views from the bridge.

Work on the bridges will be done in phases, with only one per gorge under construction at a time.
