CORTLAND COUNTY, N.Y. -- The Cortland County Sheriff's office arrested two people in connection with multiple burglaries in mid-August. Donald Stewart, 48, of Marathon, and Erica Brown of the town of Lapeer, are accused of stealing multiple items over a period of a few days from a residence in the town of Hartford.

Police say items such as a dishwasher, hot water heater, tire rims, an oil burner, and more were stolen to be sold as scrap metal.

Stewart and Brown have been charged with felony burglary, petit larceny, and conspiracy. Brown has also been charged with endangering the welfare of a child for leaving her nine- and 10-year-old children home alone while allegedly committing the crimes.

They have both been sent to Cortland County Jail on $5,000 bail.
