ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Whether it's new construction or upgrades, more and more homes now have solar panels. They save money and look nice, but they also present a new challenge for firefighters.

That's why members of the Fayetteville Fire Department took part in special training Tuesday. They were invited in by a local homeowner to get some hands on experience. The owner of CNY Solar was also there to lay out the facts about the product.

Two of the biggest takeaways from training: cutting through the roof of a house isn't an option if there are solar panels, and shutting off the power to the house doesn't mean the panels are powered down.

"Can they step on a panel? Can they move the panels? And what can they take down? So, with some of it, some of the pipes can be hot on the inside. If you shut it off down in basement, it's still live on the roof," said Justin Williams, CNY Solar owner.

"Knowledge is power. So, the more we know about them, the more we know how to deal with them. We're now more comfortable with how to disconnect the power to make sure we're all operating safely," said Jansen Casscles, Fayetteville Fire Lieutenant.

The owner of CNY Solar said it's the first time he's even taken part in training for firefighters.
