Child critically burned in fire

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A six-year-old boy was severely burned and is in critical condition after starting a fire while playing with a lighter.

The Syracuse Fire Department responded to a fire just after 2 p.m. Tuesday on South State Street. Crews say the home had minor damage, but the boy had second and third degree burns which covered 40 to 50 percent of his body. He was taken to Upstate University Hospital and then airlifted to Shriner's Hospital in Boston, where is listed in critical condition.

The boy's grandmother also sustained a minor burn to her hand.
