Traditionally the butter sculpture is revealed the day before the State Fair opens and themes previously have ranged from nursery rhymes to sports figures and different messages promoting nutrition. This year's sculpture is named “New York Goes for the Gold with Greek Yogurt” and it’s a tribute to Greek yogurt which has had a great impacted New York's dairy farmers.
The sculpture also brings in something Greece has been known for, the Olympics. This butter sculpture shows a cow wearing a toga and holding a New York State flag with two children running carrying torches and medals. In the center of the sculpture there is a giant cup of Greek yogurt.
"We came up with the idea of playing off of something else Greece is known for, obviously the Olympics, gave us an excuse to put a cow in a toga, which I think is a lot of fun for people. So we were really able to take a tongue and cheek look, kind of a whimsical look and I think people will really like it," said Beth Meyer, American Dairy Association Communications Director.
The butter sculpture can be found in the Dairy Products Building where you can also find other dairy products like fudge, ice cream, cheese, and of course the 25 cent milk.
