The investigation continues into Thursday night's shooting and stabbing in Binghamton. It stemmed from a domestic dispute call. The chief of police held a news conference Friday afternoon. Our Melissa Kakareka was there and has the details.

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Binghamton's Police Chief says his officer's actions during a domestic incident Thursday night likely saved a woman's life.

Around 8 p.m. Thursday, police received a 911 call about a domestic dispute on Miles Street. The two responding officers approached the second floor, knocked on the apartment door, and at that point, heard a woman screaming that her boyfriend had a knife to her throat. At that point, the officers forced their way into the apartment and saw Ralph Townsend, 53, stabbing his girlfriend on the bed.

One of the officers fired two shots into Townsend's back. His injuries are not life threatening. The victim has not been identified, but police say she had four stab wounds and is being treated at Wilson Hospital.

"It probably saved her life. She had to have surgery last night. As I said, life-threatening injuries, so stopping the attack, I think it's safe to say saved her life,” Binghamton Police Chief Joseph Zikuski said.

Ralph Townsend has been charged with second degree attempted murder, assault and felony possession of a weapon.

Police say he has been arrested before for domestic violence and various other things. They have also responded to domestic violence calls at the apartment before and neighbors say they could always hear the couple fighting.
