SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse Police are working to figure out what happened after a man was found dead in the city. The body of Jermaine Whitehead, 37, was found in the backyard of a home on the 300 block of Furman Street around 8:15 a.m. on Saturday.

The medical examiner is still investigating the cause of death. According to investigators, officers responded to a report of shots fired in the same area around 4:45 a.m. They did find shell casings, but no victims were located. Police are looking to see if there is a connection.

"We don't know that its actually related at this point, but of course we're working under the assumption that it could have occurred at that time, and then the victim wasn't discovered. He was found behind a shed in the backyard of one of the houses there," explained Sgt. Tom Connellan, Syracuse Police.

Police said there was a party in the area earlier in the evening, and they're reaching out to the public for help with their investigation. If you have any information, please call (315) 442-5222.
