NEW YORK STATE FAIR -- Working off that fair food can be challenging, but horses and their riders don't waste any time as they showed off their skills and agility at the Country Max Arena on Saturday.
The State Fair Barrel Race had riders looking to hit top speed as they trace a clover leaf pattern around barrels in the arena. And while men, women, boys, and girls all compete today, that was not always the case.
"Its actually a rodeo event that started back when the west was won. When the cowboys were riding their bulls and roping their calves, the girls had nothing to do. So, they set up a couple of barrels and hay bails, and started turning them, and that become a rodeo event," Amy Galway, Barrel Race Organizer explained. "Because of that, the National Barrel Horse Association evolved."
