CANASTOTA, N.Y. -- The community turned out in Canastota for a parade in honor of Emily Simmons. The 12-year old was seriously injured in a car crash in May.

During her recovery, Simmons fell in and out of a coma and battled back against a severe head injury.

Now she has finally progressed enough to return home to continue her recovery. She was welcomed back to Canastota in grand fashion with her supporters lining the street decked out in purple, her favorite color.

"Well she's been through a lot. She's a big fan of cheerleading. And we just wanted to show our support and honor her for everything that she's been through," Canastota High School Cheerleading Coach Jennifer Courtwright said.

A benefit dinner is planned for October to help raise money for Simmons. The family says she will continue outpatient therapy at home.
