STATEWIDE -- With Labor Day weekend wrapping up, AAA officials are projecting an increase in travel this year compared with last.

AAA says the Labor Day travel jump should be around three percent compared with 2011. The majority of people are traveling by car, but air travel is also increasing.

Experts say there are a number of possible explanations for the jump.

AAA Southern NY President Richard Jacobs said, "Possibly the perspective that some people have that the economy is getting better. A lot of people didn't take vacations the past few years because of cost. They do see hotel prices creeping up a little bit, and oil prices. But the largest factor is its the end of summer and they want a vacation."

Overall, AAA estimates about 33 million Americans traveled at least 50 miles from home this weekend.
