BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Plans are still moving forward to replace an elementary school in Binghamton. MacArthur Elementary School was severely damaged during the first day of school last September.

Pre-school children have spent the last year at Binghamton's Benjamin Franklin School while other students have been split up between the St. Thomas Aquinas School and St. Francis of Assisi. They will remain at those temporary locations until a new school is built.

District officials say they've been working successfully with FEMA and the State Department of Education. Architects have sought input from staff and have preliminary design ideas, some of which include various green initiatives.

Administrators say it's hard to believe how much progress has been made over just one year.

"I can't believe it’s been a whole year to be quite honest with you and I think it’s because we've been so busy, we've had so much to do, so yes, we've come a long way. We are in the process of rebuilding a new school. A year ago, we were just dealing with the impact of losing our largest elementary school," said Binghamton City School District Superintendent Peggy Wozniak.

It will take at least two years before a new elementary school is ready for students.
