ITHACA, N.Y. -- Ithaca's police chief will retire this month. The city police department confirms that Chief Ed Vallely is stepping down.
Vallely was appointed interim chief in 2007 before being named to the job permanently in 2008. Before that, he worked 18 years as an investigator and headed up the department's juvenile unit.
According to his personal website, Vallely was the first officer to rise through the ranks of the department and become chief in more than 40 years.
