SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A north side Syracuse neighborhood is one step closer to filling a gap left by the shutdown of a Wegmans food market earlier this year.

The city of Syracuse negotiated a deal to bring Tops Supermarkets to the site and insure those living in the area have a grocery store available. A key step in the deal is a 10-year-old tax deal known as a PILOT. Syracuse common councilors have now approved that agreement.

"You're talking the creation of 81 jobs. There's obviously a very serious market demand in the area for the supermarket. It's a win, across the board, for everybody. Obviously for the constituents, the businesses, but also for the city," said Khalid Bey, (D) Syracuse Common Councilor.

The city is hoping to see the new Tops market open in the Pond Street location by the end of the year.
