General Clinton Park in Bainbridge has a few extra campers this weekend. A group of volunteers called the RV Care-A-Vanners have parked their RVs there while they are in the area. Our Melissa Kakareka tells us who they are and what they're doing in town.

WEST BAINBRIDGE, N.Y. -- They come from various cities across the country to lend a helping hand.

"I retired 18 years ago now and I was looking to do something where I could see it help people," said RV Care-A-Vanner Jim Lilja from Vermont.

They are called RV Care-A-Vanners. The group is affiliated with Habitat for Humanity International and they travel across the United States in their RVs to volunteer at various local chapters of Habitat for Humanity. Most are either retired or semi-retired.

"I've been in 30 states and provinces since I started working, probably been on 45 to 50 different builds," said Lilja.

This week, the volunteers are camping at General Clinton Park in Bainbridge. They are helping build a home for a West Bainbridge mother and her family on State Highway 206.

"It's Lorraine Cornish and her two sons. One has disabilities, so there's a lot we have to do to the house for that. We have to build a ramp," said Chenango County Habitat for Humanity President Kathy Kanudsen.

It's an effort that leaders with Chenango County Habitat for Humanity say will make a huge impact on the progress of the project, which has been underway since April.

"Normally it takes us two years to build us a house and with these people here, it’s going to save us a lot of time. They are going to finish putting all the windows in and all the siding while they are here this week," said Kanudsen.

And one that allows the RV Care-A-Vanners to see the country while they give back to those in need.

"It’s a wonderful way to give back and really, we take away more that we give and it’s great fellowship and fun," said RV Care-A-Vanner Diane Howlett from Vermont.
