MADISON COUNTY, N.Y. -- A proposal to ban smoking on Madison County property passes Tuesday. The new ban prohibits the smoking of tobacco on any county owned or leased land, but excludes parks and forest lands.
Some community members believe the ban borderlines unnecessary government intrusion. But the Joseph Wicks, the County Coordinator for the Tobacco Control Program says the new ban may help to educate the community of the dangers of first and second hand smoke.
"I think one of the main purposes of government, and especially local government, is to help the communities become healthier. In turn, which leads to healthier lives and different costs savings for community members," Wicks said.
The county board also banned the possession and sale of the dangerous synthetic drug known as bath salts during the meeting.
