HERKIMER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Voters in a few Herkimer County school districts will decide today if merging three districts is in the best interest of the community.

People in the Herkimer, Ilion, and Mohawk districts will head to the polls for a straw vote to determine if a formal referendum on a merger should take place. A merger between the districts could lead to more state aid to operate one larger district.

Over the past several months a number of community meetings have taken place to discuss the option of consolidation.

Today's polls will be open from noon until 8 p.m. in each of the districts high schools and junior-senior high schools.
