HERKIMER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Three Herkimer County School Districts have voted in favor to move forward with a merger.

Studies have been conducted over the past few years in support of the consolidation, but in the end, the decision came down to the voters. Herkimer, Ilion and Mohawk residents came to the polls Thursday night to cast their vote and many residents had varying opinions.

"They're going to be using more buses, classes are going to be bigger and the kids aren't going to be able to get the one-on-one they probably should," Ilion resident Diana Kucerak said.

"They'll be able to have more programs, more activities going on. And they'll be able to reinsert some of the programs they had to eliminate for lack of funding. So I can't image anyone that wouldn't vote for it really," Ilion resident John Weakley said.

In the end, all three schools will be moving forward in the hopes to consolidate. One more poll will be done on October 18th, called a binding referendum, where residents will make the final decision of whether or not their school districts will officially merge.
