SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Notre Dame became the latest school to bail on the Big East on Wednesday, announcing an agreement to join the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The move follows those of Syracuse, Pittsburgh, and previously Boston College, Miami, and Virginia Tech in going from the Big East to the ACC. The Irish will join the conference in all sponsored sports except football, maintaining the program's current independence, but it will play five games against ACC teams each year.
The Big East says it will hold Notre Dame to the 27-month waiting period to leave the conference as stated in the bylaws but an expedited departure is expected following the expedited departures negotiated by Syracuse, Pittsburgh, and West Virginia over the past year.
