NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. -- New York City's proposed ban on sugary drinks, like soda, is going before a health panel for a final vote. The plan would limit the sales of sugar-heavy drinks in more than 16 ounce cups in restaurants, and movie theaters.

Today's Board of Health meeting could bring the final vote on the proposal. If passed, it could go into effect in March of next year.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and health advocates say soda and sugar are the leading causes of obesity. Others say it's not the city government's place to limit how much of something people can buy.

Soda makers also say the plan unfairly singles out soft drinks as fat culprits, and some say they plan on suing if the measure becomes law.
