AUBURN, N.Y. -- Protesters in Cayuga County gather to oppose hydrofracking and the hazardous waste that comes with it. Members of the Cayuga Anti-Fracking Alliance rallied in front of Auburn's Memorial City Hall in honor of Freedom from Frack Waste Day on Wednesday.

The group raised concerns over the discharge of untreated fracking waste into the landscape and prominent local bodies of water. They pointed to Ohio, where health problems have been reported.

Community members in Cayuga County are concerned about toxic waste being injected in their own land and do not want that practice to spread.

"And we know the toxins that are in it, and not a lot of people know that this is happening here in New York, and we don't want that to spread. If drilling continues to grow, we don't want to see those injection disposal wells to come here,” said Mary Menapace, a protester.

The Auburn City Council enacted a ban on the treatment of wastewater produced from drilling last year, but with the change of government, officials had voted to rescind the ban, only seven months after its enactment.
