SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- There's a whole lot the Syracuse University campus is celebrating. The University went beyond its one billion dollar fundraising goal more than three months before their target date.

In 2005, the Board of Trustees and Chancellor started "The Campaign for Syracuse University" with an end date of December 31st, 2012. As of August 31st, the campaign exceed its goal by more than $8.6 million.

The funds will go to increasing scholarships, to endow deanships, enhance teaching and research facilities among other things.

"60,000 donors to this campaign. That's an incredible show of support during what's been one of the toughest times of our economy and some amazing generosity from a few of our trustees and lead donors that really set a new bar for Syracuse in terms of giving," said Tom Walsh, Advancement and External Affairs Executive Vice President.

In November, the university will continue the celebration with a gathering for volunteers involved with the campaign.
