RODMAN, N.Y. -- They are celebrating 20 years of waste in Jefferson County. The Development Authority of the North Country held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday morning, ahead of the open annual house at the Rodman Landfill.

The landfill serves as a regional disposal site for Jefferson, Lewis, and Saint Lawrence counties. According to officials, the facility has seen many changes over the last two decades, particularly with a transition form disposal to recycling, and it is well positioned for the future.

"The facility was just permitted for another five years of operation. We're completing the construction on two additional cells that will give us capacity through 2020. And, we're designing an addition to the landfill," said Jim Wright, Executive Director Development Authority of the North Country.

In addition to the ribbon cutting ceremony, officials also signed an agreement with the South Jefferson School District to start up the first school composting and recycling program in the region.
