SYRACUSE, N.Y. - In a game that fans may have thought would be easy but Syracuse claimed would not be, the Orange fended off a good fight from Stony Brook to win 28-17 on Saturday.
The Seawolves play in the lower Football Championship Subdivision but were ranked No. 16 in that level's coaches poll this week and showed their abilities by taking a 17-14 lead into halftime. However the second half belonged to Syracuse as the Orange's defense pitched a shutout and the offense overcame two failed goal line gambles with a pair of touchdown passes from Ryan Nassib.
Nassib completed 22 of 35 pass attempts for 335 yards and three touchdowns, Marcus Sales caught five balls for 117 yards and two touchdowns, and touted true freshman Ashton Broyld finally broke out with 81 total yards and his first collegiate touchdown.
Syracuse (1-2) next plays at Minnesota next Saturday night.
