ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Families were able to pull into the Elmira Fire Department's garage Sunday, where officers inspected their child seats and then showed parents how a car seat should properly be installed. If the seat was found to be defective, parents were able to get a free replacement funded by a grant from the New York State Governor's Traffic Safety Committee.
This was the first inspection event in years in Elmira, and officials say they just want to make sure kids are riding safely.
"The main thing we want to do today, is just to make sure the kids are leaving safer than when they got here. Make sure everyone is leaving safer," said Officer John Perrigo, Elmira Police Department.
Many more inspection events are scheduled around the region as part of Child Passenger Safety Week. To see a complete list, check out www.safeny.gov.
