TROY, N.Y. -- A patriotic celebration out in the Capital Region, hundreds turned out in the city of Troy on Sunday to honor their favorite son at the 37th annual Uncle Sam Parade and Festival. The celebration honors Samuel Wilson, a Troy meatpacker who many believe is the inspiration for the famed Uncle Sam figure.

As the story goes, during the War of 1812, Wilson stamped his barrels of meat with the initials US, leading soldiers to say that they stood for Uncle Sam. The parade also gives the community a chance to celebrate American pride and our veterans. The Uncle Sam Parade dates back to 1976.
