SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Gas prices across much of our region are well over that $4 mark, but the question is how much longer until we get some relief at the pump?

The current price of gas in the Syracuse area according to AAA is $4.09. That's up 26 cents than what we were paying just one month ago.

And believe it or not, just last year we were paying 36 cents less per gallon when the price was averaging $3.73 per gallon.

There may be some good news on the way. Experts say a switch to less expensive winter blended gas from summer blend this time of year typically leads to drop in gas prices. Prices could begin to come down in the latter half of this month entering fall.

According to AAA our current price is only about 14 cents lower than the area's highest recorded price, recorded in July of 2008.

Recent tensions in the Middle East along with high crude oil prices have led to the latest surge at a time when we usually see prices decline.

"We do always talk about the number of factors that can impact the price of gasoline. And, any foreseen events, and unfortunately what's putting pressure on prices now has a lot to do what's happening in the Middle East," said Diana Dibble, AAA CNY Public Affairs Manager.

In the meantime, you can take some conservation efforts. AAA suggests shopping around for the best prices for gas before you fill up. Try to consolidate your errands and carpool when you can. In addition, try to stay up on your oil changes, rotate your tires, and maintain your vehicle as best as possible.
