OSWEGO COUNTY, N.Y. -- Former Oswego Mayor John Gosek has filed an appeal, seeking to lower his sex offender status level. In 2009, Oswego County Judge Walter Hafner assigned Gosek a level two sex offender designation, which means the court believes there is a moderate risk of Gosek re-offending.
Gosek served three years in federal prison, after pleading guilty in 2006 for paying to arrange a sexual encounter with two teenage girls.
If Gosek's sex offender status is lowered to a level one, his name would be removed from the sex offender registry after 20 years. His current status as a level two offender carries a life-time penalty on the list.
A decision on the appeal could be issued as early as next week.
