UTICA, N.Y. -- The powerful synthetic drug known as bath salts continues to be a concern across the nation and at Utica College, a public forum was held to teach parents, students and teachers about the warning signs and medical effects of bath salts.

Oneida County officials say compared to the summer months, bath salts arrests have significantly decreased and they attribute it to a number of factors, including the new county laws which make the drugs illegal.

"I think the fact that they took out one of the major suppliers, that helps a lot and at the same time, the federal government and the county stated to address the problem," said Oneida County District Attorney Scott McNamara.

"When we first approached this, we knew that it should be a uniform state law and that's what we incorporated and we're going to continue to do that," said State Senator Joseph Griffo.

Senator Joseph Griffo says their continuing effort to ban bath salts state wide will hopefully give law enforcement the tools they need to put an end to this kind of drug abuse.
