SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Dozens of officers from the Syracuse Police Department were honored Wednesday at the annual Medal Award Ceremony.

The Syracuse Police Benevolent Association recognized 28 officers for their exceptional service and commitment to the city at the Summit Federal Credit Union auditorium in Syracuse.

The ceremony gave the community the opportunity to see how essential the police force is to the stability and well-being of the public and the constant acts of bravery committed by its officers.

"I think that it's good for the public to be able to see what the officers encounter on a daily basis, even in a small City like Syracuse, we have life and death situations every week," said Jeffrey Piedmonte, Syracuse Police Benevolent Association President.

"Each member of the Syracuse Police Department, given the same set of circumstances, I am confident that they would rise to the occasion to put themselves in harm’s way to save life and property of any member of the community because this is simply what we do," Syracuse Police Chief Frank Fowler said

Some of the individual and group awards granted include the SPD Life Saving Award, the PBA Merit Award, officers of the year and the Distinguished Service Award.
