SCRIBA, N.Y. -- An investigation is underway at Nine Mile Nuclear Plant in Oswego County to determine why the Unit One reactor experienced an automatic shutdown Thursday morning. The reactor was operating at 100 percent power when the shutdown occurred just before 9:30 a.m.

All nuclear reactors automatically shut down if the system detects a problem. Preliminary data shows the unit may have experienced a "turbine trip" but that has not been confirmed.

Inspectors from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission are assisting in the investigation. Right now it is unclear when the reactor will return to service.
