SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Twelve people were displaced by a fire in Syracuse. It happened at an apartment building on Kirkpatrick Street just before 6 p.m. Thursday.

Fire officials say the fire started in the middle of the second floor. They were able to knock it down quickly and contain the damage.

"Second floor damage is confined to one room in the middle of the house. Smoke and water damage throughout. We did have some minor extension to the attic," said Syracuse Deputy Fire Chief David Reeds.

Everyone was able to get out safely. The three families of four are being assisted by the Red Cross.

There is still no word on what caused the fire.
