VESTAL, N.Y. -- Binghamton University is ready to play ball as it unveiled three new sports facilities on campus.
The gates to the Bearcats' new tennis, baseball and softball fields were officially opened Friday. Coaches and players were joined by BU's president and athletic director, as well as local elected officials to get a first look at the state-of-the-art facilities.
The softball squad moves to the west side of campus after years of playing at the East Gym Field, while the baseball and tennis teams return to campus after being displaced last season due to construction.
After years of discussion and work, teams say the finished product is more than they could have imagined.
"We had a baseball field, now we have a baseball stadium,” said Tim Sinicki, baseball coach for the Bearcats. “I think it's one of the finest in the Northeast and finest in the conference. I can look at our guys and honestly tell you that there's a true sentiment of excitement and appreciation for what the university has done for this program."
"It's so exciting to actually get out and practice on it and play on it. We've heard about the construction and it coming through, but to actually be here and be able to step on the field is really exciting," Bearcats’ outfielder Shannon Kane said.
Bearcats fans don't have to wait long to see their teams in action on the new fields as both baseball and softball will be hosting contests this weekend.
