NEW YORK STATE -- The Department of Environmental Conservation is now offering New York hunters the opportunity to purchase their licenses online.

The DEC says the move was made to make the process of obtaining a hunting license as convenient as possible. The statewide hunting season begins in October.

The season kicks off with a new youth hunter weekend over Columbus Day weekend. It will give youth ages 14 and 15 the chance to shoot deer and bears across New York.

"We really want to be able to give youth a special opportunity, give them an opportunity to enjoy without the competition of adults. Something special between them and their mentors," said Jim Farquhar, DEC regional wildlife manager.
