Supreme Court could take up same-sex marriage cases

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Supreme Court could announce today whether it will take up same-sex marriage in two separate cases, including one from New York.

One case involves a New York woman who sued, saying federal law unfairly treats same-sex couples who are lawfully married in their own states. She says she had to pay federal taxes on her wife's estate after she died, because at the time, New York State didn't recognize their out-of-state marriage.

The other case is from California and centers on the state's voter approved ban on same-sex marriage.

If the Supreme Court takes the cases, oral arguments and eventual rulings wouldn't happen until next year.
