BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- As the weather gets colder, people are being reminded that their home may not be as energy efficient as they would like it to be.

Government officials joined with Green Jobs New York and local contractors on Tuesday to promote the Southern Tier Home Performance Energy Efficiency Program. More than 500 homeowners have taken advantage of the program, which provides energy audits and low interest loans to get the recommendations addressed.

"I got to see the energy loss in the house and I got to see how he fixed it and we're so happy that we actually bought the house next door and we're going to do it over there. We're working on the paper work, doing it now," home owner Donald Sharpe said.

The program’s coordinator says that she now hopes to expand the program into neighboring counties where residents may not be aware of its benefits.
