ALEXANDRIA, VA -- Army Secretary and former long-time North Country Congressman John McHugh is in the hospital after a bicycle accident. McHugh was riding his bike in Alexandria, Virginia around 6:30 p.m. Monday when the accident happened.

No additional details about the accident are available at this time, but an Army spokesperson said McHugh did not need surgery. The spokesperson said McHugh is expected to fully resume his duties when doctors say he can return.

McHugh grew up in Watertown, and then later represented the 24th Congressional District in New York from 1993 before it was renumbered to the 23rd District in 2003.

In 2009 he was nominated into the position of United States Secretary of the Army by President Obama.
