SENNETT, N.Y. -- Investigators continue to look into the cause of a deadly crash in the Cayuga County Town of Sennett. It happened at about 4:30 a.m. on Route 5 near Depot Road.
Authorities say a car driven by Timothy Walsh, 20, of Auburn crossed the center line and crashed head-on into a tractor trailer. They say the truck pushed the car backward a few hundred yards and came to rest on top of the car. Walsh was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver of the truck was taken to the hospital for minor injuries.
The Sheriff says the crash caused debris to spread across a large portion of the roadway.
"Probably because of the weight of the truck. The truck was full of lime, which is heavy, it’s liquid lime, and it was full of lime, so there was a lot of weight there. The car was coming down a hill a little bit. We have no idea why this car lost control. We may never know,” said David Gould, Cayuga County Sheriff.
Route 5 remains closed this afternoon while crews clear the debris and spilled fuel and accident reconstruction teams conduct their investigation.
