MALONE, N.Y. -- For the past three months, police in Malone have been investigating two individuals suspected of trafficking drugs. Wednesday night, police stopped their vehicle and found over 1,000 bindles of heroin, which has an estimated street value of $36,000. Police say these suspects are not first time offenders.

"The investigation revealed that the defendants have been traveling to Massachusetts approximately twenty times per month over the past three months," said Derek Champagne, Franklin County District Attorney.

Champagne says in those three months, the suspects brought about $1.2 million worth of heroin into the county. Police also had been noticing suspicious behavior at another residence and had been getting calls from concerned neighbors. And that led police to Moore Street in the Town of Bombay, where they ended up seizing over 19 pounds of marijuana, almost $10,000 in cash and a stolen handgun.

"Upon the execution of the second search warrant, police found a small amount of heroin and drug paraphernalia at the residence of Randy P. Hart Jr.," said Champagne.

All in all, three arrests were made in connection with the traffic stop and the search warrants. This comes in a line of cases Franklin County is currently pursuing against suspected drug dealers. While police are happy the drugs are off the streets, they are worried about increased drug use in the county.

"I'm extremely concerned about the heroin going through this village. It's a major problem. It's like who's buying it and how are they getting the money to purchase it," said Todd LePine, Mayor of Malone.

The Malone Police Department says that as drug use goes up, so does an increase in other crimes, such as burglary.

Police say community members reporting suspicious activity helped greatly in their investigation. They encourage anyone who sees suspicious behavior to contact their local police department.
