SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Layoffs at the Syracuse Post-Standard will be announced Monday as the newspaper shifts away from print media to put more of a focus online. Last month, the Post-Standard announced it was cutting home delivery of the paper to three days per week: Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday. This change will take place starting January 1.
As part of the plan, it will split into two companies. One segment will be in charge of gathering news, while the other segment will be seeking ad revenue. On Monday, current employees will be notified whether they will be offered a new position, or a severance package.
Laid off employees will have the opportunity to apply for about 60 new openings that require special skill sets within the new companies. The move will make Syracuse the only major city in the state without daily home delivery of a local newspaper. The number of layoffs is still unknown.
