SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- People are trying to raise awareness about suicides in Central New York. A new event was created to help people recognize some of the services available to them.

The first ever Stand Against Suicide event debuted at Syracuse's Inner Harbor on Saturday. Organizers said suicide is a bigger problem in Central New York than many realize.

"It's not much talked about. We primarily focus on mental illness, mental health, and the statistics are shocking. We want to bring it to the forefront, we want people to talk about it, we want people to know that there's help out there," said Kelly Blackburn, Stand Against Suicide.

Walkers went up and down the creekwalk and held hands during a moment of silence.
