HORSEHEADS, N.Y. -- If you had some unused or expired prescription drugs, Saturday was the day to disposed of them properly. Sheriff's departments around the Twin Tiers host a disposal event twice each year. The Chemung County Sheriff's Deputies were out in Horseheads collecting prescriptions from people.

After each collection, the Drug Enforcement Administration takes the drugs to have them properly incinerated. The nationwide Take Back Initiative is a way to keep the environment safe, and officials see a great response each year.

"It keeps the medications out of the ground water, if you flush them down the toilet, which was the old way to do things," explained Lt. Douglas Hooper, Chemung County Sheriff's Office. "And it's a great program. Everybody seems to be really thankful that it's here."

People are asked to keep the medications in their original container with the label intact and their name blacked out.
