ITHACA, N.Y. -- A fire shut down a popular restaurant in downtown Ithaca Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to the State Diner on West State Street around 4:30 p.m. and they arrived as smoke and flames were coming from the roof.

The diner was open at the time and first responders helped get customers and employees to safety.

No one was injured, but it took about 25 minutes to get the fire under control.

"Quite a bit of damage in the attic space above the diner. But there's smoke and there's water damage from extinguishing the fire. And there's going to be a lot more damage from overhaul because we have to open up the ceilings and get up into the attic space," Ithaca Fire Chief C. Thomas Parsons said.

The chief expects the State Diner to remain closed for awhile. A team is investigating the cause of the fire.
